Azithromycin

Always read any patient information that is given by your pharmacy when you start Zithromax and when you get a refill. Take azithromycin orally as your doctor instructs. Usually it will be once per day without food. If stomach upset occurs you can take azithromycin with food. Your dosage will be based on your response to treatment and medical condition.

Take Zithromax at evenly spaced times to get the best effect. Take it at the same time daily to help you remember. Continue on azithromycin until the prescribed amount is finished, even if your symptoms disappear after a few days. If you stop antibiotic treatment early, the bacteria may continue to grow which can result in a return of your infection.

For the best effect, take this antibiotic at evenly spaced times. To help you remember, take this medication at the same time(s) every day.

Continue to take this medication until the full prescribed amount is finished, even if symptoms disappear after a few days. Make sure your are not skipping doses or stopping the medication too early. Stopping the medication too early may allow bacteria to continue to grow, which may result in a return of the infection.

Antacids containing aluminum or magnesium may decrease the absorption of azithromycin if taken at the same time. If you take an antacid that contains aluminum or magnesium, wait at least 2 hours before or after taking azithromycin.

Tell your doctor if your condition persists or worsens.

Although certain medicines should not be used together at all, as the combination can increase your risk for serious side effects. In other cases two different medicines may be used together even if an interaction might occur. In these cases, your doctor may want to change the dose, or other precautions may be necessary. The following interactions have been selected on the basis of their potential significance and are not necessarily all-inclusive.

Using this medicine with any of the following medicines is not recommended. Your doctor may decide not to treat you with this medication or change some of the other medicines you take.

• Augmentin
• Colchicine
• Digoxin
• Domperidone
• Donepezil
• Fluconazole
• Imipramine
• Pimozide
• Saquinavir
• Theophylline

Along with its needed effects, a medicine may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention. If the following side effects occur check with your doctor or nurse immediately: loose stools, diarrhea, skin irritation, cracked, dry, or scaly skin, swelling, fever, peeling skin, abdominal pain, bloody or cloudy urine, body aches and pain, burning while urinating, black or bloody stools, burning while urinating, or chills. Other side effects include: cough, congestion, chest pain, dizziness, dryness or soreness of the throat, drowsiness, fainting, irregular or slow heart rate, joint or muscle pain. You should also seek medical attention if you experience sweating, shivering, red irritated eyes, chest tightness, throwing up blood, yellow skin or eyes, unpleasant breath odor.

Sometimes you may experience side effects of azithromycin that do not need medical attention. These will usually go away during treatment as your body acclimates to the medication. Your doctor may also be able to help you prevent or mitigate some of these side effects. If any of these side effects linger or become bothersome check in with your health care provider. The following side effects are rare: belching, change in taste, acting angrily or aggressively, dysphoria, full feeling, crying, lack or loss of strength, paranoia, nervousness, restlessness, sensation of spinning, upset stomach, nausea, vomiting. The following side effects occur so infrequently it is not known how likely they are to occur. They include: pain in the joints, difficulty moving, severe sunburn, muscle stiffness or pain, increased skin sensitivity.
