What is Imatinib (gleevec) used for?

Imatinib is a cancer drug used to treat some types of cancer including gastrointestinal stromal tumors, acute lymphoblastic leukemia and chronic myeloid leukemia. It may be used to treat other conditions such as myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative diseases, hypereosinophilic syndrome and aggressive systemic mastocytosis and gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST). It works to slow or even stop the growth of cancer cells in the body. If you are unsure why you are taking Imatinib, call your doctor to learn why you are taking it and how it is meant to benefit you. Do not share this with others as this may not be an effective treatment and can lead to adverse reactions. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, nursing or plan to become pregnant as Imatinib can harm an unborn child. Eating grapefruit juice or grapefruit adjacent products can lead to adverse reactions.

    How To Use Imatinib?

Before taking your first dose of Imatinib, and after every refill, carefully read the drug information included with the drug. If anything is unclear, call your doctor or pharmacist as proper use will provide the most benefit.

It is often taken twice a day with meals and a full glass of water. It can be stirred with a spoon in liquids or soft foods if you are unable to swallow the tablets whole, depending on your dose.

Imatinib works best when taken around the same time every day. If you miss a dose, take it when you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your schedule.
