Voltaren gel contains the active ingredient diclofenac. Diclofenac is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (also called an NSAID). Voltaren gel works to reduce substances in the body that cause inflammation and pain. How to Use Voltaren Emulgel?

Always use Voltaren gel exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Carefully read and follow the directions on your prescription label. Do not use Voltaren gel in larger or smaller amounts than recommended. Use the lowest dose that effectively treats your condition.

Read the patient information leaflet as well as the medication guides you get each time you refill your prescription.

When applying Voltaren gel, if you’re not treating your hands, wash them after applying the gel. Wait approximately 10 minutes after application to get dressed or wear gloves, and wait around an hour to bathe or shower.

Do not apply Voltaren gel on an open wound or on areas of rash, infection, peeling skin, infection, or burn. Do not cover skin treated with Voltaren gel with a bandage or expose it to the heat from a sauna, heating pad, or hot tub. If you heat or bandage the treated area, it can increase the amount of diclofenac that gets absorbed through your skin.

To treat pain from osteoarthritis with Voltaren gel you will be supplied with dosing cards to show you how much gel should be utilized for a 2 or 4 gram dose. Squeeze the gel onto this card along the line of your dose. Do not use more gel than will fit on the length of the dosing line. Use the card to apply the Voltaren gel to your skin and then rub it in with your hands gently.
